History of the Rouble.
The rouble has been the currency in Russia for 500 years. The name “rouble” is thought
to come from the Russian for “chop”, literally referring to the way a section was cut off
a silver ingot, each section had a different value according to its weight.
Since December 2013 the official symbol of the Russian rouble is the Cyrillic letter P
with a single added horizontal stroke.
In 1710 the rouble was first divided into kopeks, 100 of which made up a rouble. Ten
roubles are sometimes referred to as chervonets. Historically, it was the name for the
first Russian three-rouble gold coin issued for general circulation in 1701. The current
meaning comes from the Soviet golden chervonets issued in 1923. All these names are
no longer in use, however.
In the 18
century half a kopek or a single kopek were made from copper, while five
kopeks up to 50 kopeks and one rouble coins were originally made from gold.
After the Russian civil war, silver was used for lower value coins with gold chervonets
minted in 1923. In 1961 new materials such as aluminium and bronze were introduced,
along with nickel and zinc.
Between 1769 and 1917 there were only Imperial issued bank notes, or assignats. After
1917 the provisional government issued bank notes, called kerenki. Soon after, in 1918

B. On an unknown date in November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver (1890-1967) was out
shooting. That evening it was realized that it was not possible to confirm in
reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe’s fastest game
It occurred to Sir Hugh, managing director of the Guinness Breweries, that there
must be numerous other questions debated in Britain and in Ireland, but there was
no reference book with which to settle arguments about records. He realized then
that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular.
C. On 12 September 1954, Sir Hugh invited the twins Norris and Ross McWhirter to
see if their agency in London could help. After founding The Guinness Book of
Records at 107 Fleet Street, London, the first 197-page edition came out on 27
August 1955 and went to the top of the British bestseller lists by Christmas. The
McWhirters continued to publish it for many years. Both brothers had an
encyclopedic memory on the TV series Record Breakers, based on the book,
they were asked questions by children in the audience on various world records
and could usually give the correct answer.
D. Recent editions have focused on record feats by human competitors.
Competitions range from obvious ones such as weightlifting to the longest egg

activities that people of all ages can enjoy.
Speaker 2 (man) My last business trip was a disaster! I rushed to the airport, only to realize that I had
forgotten my briefcase with my presentation at the office. There was no time to go back, so I boarded
the plane without it. During the flight I tried to get some sleep, but this annoying man next to me was
talking all the time, which was very frustrating. When I finally got to the hotel? My secretary had left a
note telling she had emailed all the documents I would need. Finally, some good news!
Speaker 3 (woman) Tow years ago, I visited Paris. It was amazing! There were countless things to see
and at the end of each day I was exhausted by all the walking! I visited many museums and famous
landmarks. The language difference was a little hard, but many people spoke English. I also bought
some things. They were really expensive, but of excellent quality. However, I was shocked to find out
that the food was no so good as people say. But, all in all, I had a wonderful time!
One of my favourite things to do after my holidays is to develop my pictures. I take dozens of snaps
when on holiday and it sometimes takes me days to put them in order and in albums. I have pictures
from my visit to Kenya, China, Bali and Italy. At the beginning, I used to take pictures of all the
landmarks, but then I realized that those were boring. I have since started to take pictures of the strange
things that make each country unique. Also, if I do decide to take pictures of landmarks, I make sure
people are standing in front. Who knows, may be some day I can create a picture book with all my
Last year, my friends and I participated in a school exchange programme. For two weeks, we had the
opportunity to live with a family in another country. We were sent to three different host families in
Boston. My host family was nice, but their daughter was a bit strange. She hardly spoke to me, and
kept looking at me in a curious way! Also, while my other friends went on exciting excursions with
their host families, I had tow dull weeks, sitting inside a house watching American television. Let’s
just say I was happy to return home.

The trip of Lifetime
This summer holiday, my friend Irvin and I wanted to do something different.
Instead of wasting our time staying at home watching TV and playing computer games as
usual, we decided to go camping.
After getting permission from our parents, we began planning our trip. We made a
list of all the food and supplies we would need and spent an entire afternoon searching
for the best place to buy our camping equipment. In the end, our tent, stove and sleeping
bags cost a lot of money, but it was worth it.
When the day finally arrived, my Uncle Bob was kind enough to drive us to the
campsite after he got off his work. We knew it would take us a couple of hours to get
there and Irvin and I grew more and more excited as we got closer to where we were
going. It was dark by the time we arrived, but we didn’t care. We waved happily at Uncle
Bob as he drove away. Then, after a bit of trouble and a lot of laughter, Irvin and I
the tent and lit the cooking stove. As we sat having our first meal at the camp
spaghetti –we both agreed it was the best food we had ever eaten. A short time later,
warm and comfortable in our sleeping bags, we quickly fell asleep and drea
what our great adventure would bring.

He invented the ballpoint pen (the biro). His invention has made writing a lot easier for everyone. In the 1930s Lazlo Biro worked for a newspaper in Budapest in Hungary. While writing his articles he used an ink pen which left a lot of ink stains on paper. He often watched the newspaper being printed by huge printing machines. Biro noticed that the ink used in the printing machines dried very quickly. He wondered if this quick-drying ink could be used in pens. He had the idea of using a tube of quick-drying ink with a ball at the end. He found that when you wrote with it, the ball allowed ink to flow out of the tube and on to the paper. Because it dried quickly it did not smudge like ordinary ink.Biro was very excited by his discovery. His pen was much easier and smoother to write with. It was especially helpful to left-handed people. With the pen, it was possible to write up to 200,000 words before the ink ran out. It was even possible to write on rough surfaces.Another advantage of the ballpoint pen was that it was cheap. You just threw it away when the ink ran out and got another one!Unfortunately, before he was able to patent* his invention, the Second World War broke out. Biro went to Brazil. There, he and his brother George began to improve the design of the pen. In the early 1940s they began to manufacture a new pen, but they did not have enough money to start a big company. In 1944 he sold his business to an Englishman named Henry Martin. Martin produced thousands of Biro pens. He sold many to the men and women in the American and British armies. People liked the pens very much. They were convenient and easy to carry around and they could be used anywhere. They were cheaper than fountain pens. Later, Martinsold the business to a French company called BIC. This company now sells twelve million pens a day.Biro was pleased that his pen was so popular, but he did not make a lot of money from his invention. He died quite a poor man in South America. However, his name is not forgotten. It has become an everyday word.*When an inventor patents something, this prevents others from using the invention without permission.

ReadingTime: 20 minutesMaximum points –11Task 1Read the text below and mark the facts as True or False.Russians call it the Mendeleev periodic table, while in other countries people drop the name of the Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev –the scientist who came up with the concept that atomic weights of elements largely predetermine their physical and chemical properties. In the anticipation of an anniversary of this discovery (1869-1870), we decided to find out more interesting facts from the director of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research, who kindly agreed to answer our questions. Can you tell us about the history of this discovery and its importance nowadays? It’s amazing but Mendeleev based his classification on 63 elements only, of which just 48 had atomic weights precisely determined at that time. Others had not been studied thoroughly. His first table was put on a sheet of paper with some gaps for unknown elements and he corrected the atomic weights for the elements which he thought were incorrect. All the missing elements were discovered later and all the atomic weights he thought wrong proved to be as he predicted! Now we are working on discovering the 119th of the Mendeleev table and there seems to be no limit. One of the elements discovered recently is named after Mendeleev. Were there any attempts to classify elements before and after his discovery?Yes, just a few. The earliest was based on two large groups of acid-forming and base-forming elements. However, this broad classification proved inadequate. The second made a distinction between metals and non-metals. But it turned out to be inconsistent. The German chemist Lothar Meyer put forward similar proposals shortly after Mendeleev, but criticized Mendeleev’s predictions of incorrect atomic weights of some elements. Can the Mendeleev periodic table be regarded as a law of nature? No one can deny that. It has been verified many times decades after Mendeleev’s deathin 1907. Now it’s as valuable as the work of Copernicus in astronomy or Einstein’s theory of relativity. Was Mendeleev nominated for a Nobel prize?Yes, three times –in 1905, 1906, 1907. Unfortunately, he failed to get a prize due to the long time that had passed since his discovery and the time when Nobel prizes were first introduced in 1901.
