Региональный этап всероссийской олимпиады школьников ВОШ по Английскому языку 2020-2021 ответы и задания

You will hear an interview with four young people talking about their family lives. Listen to this interview and choose the best answer A, B or C for each speaker. You will hear the recording twice. Before you listen, read the questions carefully.

  • What is Tracey’s family doing to the house at the moment?A. Extending it.B. Cleaning it.C. Painting it.
  • How often do Vicky and her father take exercise together?A. Regularly, once a week.B. Occasionally.C. Only in summer.

You are going to read an extract from a magazine article. Six paragraphs have been removed from the extract. Choose from the paragraphs A – G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on a separate answer sheet.WHEN THE HIPPOS ROAR, START PADDLING!Richard Jackson and his wife spent their honeymoon going down the Zambezi river in a canoe. „They say this is a good test of a relationship,‟ said Tim as he handed me the paddle. I wasn’t sure that such a tough challenge was what was needed on a honeymoon, but it was too late to go back. My wife, Leigh, and I were standing with our guide, Tim Came, on the banks of the Zambezi near the Zambia/Botswana border. This was to be the highlight of our honeymoon: a safari downriver, ending at the point where David Livingstone first saw the Victoria Falls.1_________________________________________________Neither of us had any canoeing experience. Tentatively we set off downstream, paddling with more enthusiasm than expertise. Soon we heard the first distant rumblings of what seemed like thunder. „Is that Victoria Falls?‟ we inquired naively. „No,‟ said Tim dismissively. „That’s our first rapid.‟ Easy, we thought. Wrong!2_________________________________________________The canoe plotted a crazed path as we careered from side to side, our best efforts seeming only to add to our plight. This was the first of many rapids, all relatively minor, all enjoyably challenging for tourists like us.3 ____________________________________The overnight stops would mean mooring at a deserted island in the middle of the river, where Tim’s willing support team would be waiting, having erected a camp and got the water warm for our bucket showers. As the ice slowly melted in the drinks, restaurant quality food would appear from a cooker using hot coals. Then people would begin to relax, and the day’s stories would take on epic proportions.4________________________________________________One morning, Tim decided to count the number of hippos we saw, in an attempt to gauge the population in this part of the river. Most of the wildlife keeps a cautious distance, and we were assured that, safe in our canoe, any potential threats would be more scared of us than we were of them – but we had been warned to give these river giants a wide berth. They’d normally stay in mid-stream, watching us with some suspicion, and greeting our departure with a cacophony of grunts.

5_________________________________________________Tim yelled „Paddle!‟ and over the next 100 metres an Olympic runner would have struggled to keep up with us. The hippo gave up the chase, and although Tim said he was just a youngster showing off, our opinion was that he had honeymooners on the menu. That would certainly be the way we told the story by the time we got home.6_________________________________________________At some times of the year, you can even enjoy a natural jacuzzi in one of the rock pools beside the falls. No permanent structures are allowed on the island – everything has to be removed when you leave. The travel brochures say it’s the world’s most exclusive picnic spot. It’s certainly the ideal place to wind down after a near miss with a hippo.A. Luckily we could make our mistakes in privacy as, apart from Tim and another couple, for two days we were alone. Our only other company was the array of bird and animal life. The paddling was fairly gentle and when we got tired, Tim would lead us to the shore and open a cool-box containing a picnic lunch.B. If that was the scariest moment, the most romantic was undoubtedly our final night’s campsite. Livingstone Island is perched literally on top of Victoria Falls. The safari company we were with have exclusive access to it: it’s just you, a sheer drop of a few hundred metres and the continual roar as millions of litres of water pour over the edge.C. There was plenty of passing traffic to observe on land as well – giraffes, hippos, elephants and warthogs, while eagles soared overhead. We even spotted two rare white rhinos – sadly shorn of their horns in an attempt to stop poaching. We paddled closer to get a better look.D. We had a 4-metre aluminium canoe to ourselves. It was a small craft for such a mighty river, but quite big enough to house the odd domestic dispute. Couples had, it seemed, ended similar trips arguing rather than paddling. But it wasn’t just newly-weds at risk. Tim assured us that a group of comedians from North America had failed to see the funny side too.E. But number 150 had other ideas. As we hugged the bank he dropped under the water. We expected him to re-surface in the same spot, as the others had done. Instead, there was a sudden roar and he emerged lunging towards the canoe.F. Over the next hour or so the noise grew to terrifying dimensions. By the time we edged around the bend to confront it, we were convinced we would be faced with mountains of white water. Instead, despite all the sound and fury, the Zambezi seemed only slightly ruffled by a line of small rocks.G. When we’d all heard enough, we slept under canvas, right next to the river bank. Fortunately, we picked a time of year largely free of mosquitoes, so our nets and various lotions remained unused. The sounds of unseen animals were our nightly lullaby.

USE OF ENGLISH

Task 1. For questions 1-16, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there. If a line is correct, put a dash ( — ). If a line has a word which should NOT be there, write this word. There is an example at the beginning.WE NEED A CLUBthat____ 0 I’m writing to your paper because that several of1 us would like to start a club where people like2 ourselves can meet the English people and exchange ideas and3 improve our English. It isn’t as easy to find a such4 club here as is in bigger towns. It isn’t that there5 is anything wrong with the people in the families which6 we are living in or for the English people where we work.7 It’s just that we would like to meet more people8 than we do as at present. Of course one the problems9 for those who are not with a family but in a10 job is that too only often the people they are11 working with are, like themselves, not English. They are very12 nice people naturally but they aren’t much of help to those of13 us who want to improve our English language. If you put14 this letter in your paper we will all be so grateful to15 you. If any of your readers would then want to make themselves16 a contact with us we would be very happy indeed.

16)By the 1820s, it extended not much beyond the Appalachians. The move to the West as we now know it began in earnest in the mid-1840s when the expression Oregon fever erupted.

17)Encouraged by the government to settle the north-western territory claimed also by Britain, thousands of homesteaders were set off for a new life at the end of the Oregon Trail.

18)The peopling of the West became not just an opportunity to be seized, but a kind of mission.

19)The Oregon Trail is a somewhat misleading term. For one thing, it wasn’t a trail in the sense of a well-deTned track. It was a corridor, highly likely variable in width, across the grassy plains.

20)Moreover, after the Trst few years relatively a few of those who travelled the trail were heading for Oregon.

21)One of the great myths of the westward migration, compounded by a thousand movies, was that the immigrants lumbered over the prairies in Conestoga wagons. These sturdy vehicles were uselessly heavy for the long pull to Oregon or California.

22)They did not haul some freight west, but almost never did they transport families. Instead westward immigrants used lighter, smaller and much nimbler wagons universally known as prairie schooners.

23)These were hauled not by horses, but by mules or oxen, which could withstand the hardships of prairie crossings far better than any horse could.

24)A Tnal myth engendered by Hollywood was that wagons gathered in a circle whenever under attack by Indians. They didn’t, and for the simple reason that the process would have been so laborious to organize that the party would very probably have been slaughtered before the job was even a one quarter accomplished.

25)Wagons were covered with a canvas, as in the movies, though that word was seldom used

26)The material was more generally known in the nineteenth century as twill. Though wagon train was also used (it is Trst recorded in 1849), the term wasn’t particularly apt.

27)For much of the journey the wagons fanned out into an advancing line up to ten miles wide to avoid each other’s dust — and providing yet another obstacle to their forming into circles.

28)Many of the early homesteaders had only the faintest idea of what they were being letting themselves in for, and often through no fault of their own. Until well into the third decade of the nineteenth century ignorance of the West remained so profound!

Australian Road Trip

Dad had been driving our family through the beautiful countryside of Australia for some days, mainly along the coast. Then he suddenly decided we should explore what the scenery was like inland too, so we turned away from the sea and drove for miles through the countryside. Dad was very optimistic about what an adventure it wouId be, but it wasn’t long before the rest of us suspected it was going to be pretty dull, not to mention uncomfortable as the roads were now full of hazardous holes. The scenery was mostly dry plains, spotted with eucalyptus trees and a few flowering plants somehow managing to survive the climate. It seemed just about the loneliest place I’d ever visited. We drove through several towns – tiny groups of houses with a handful of stores – separated by miles and miles of empty road in between, sometimes punctuated by the odd house on the roadside here and there. I was curious about the signs that pointed away up endless long driveways to single houses, and started to wonder about the lives of people living there. But immediately the thought of living in such a quiet, remote place made my heart sink, and I thought longingly of my own house thousands of miles away.If we were hoping to see some wildlife, we weren’t disappointed. Large adult kangaroos were a common sight as the sun started to go down, feeding off the rather thin grass on the roadside – probably because on the other side of the fences the cattle had eaten absolutely all the nicer stuff, so nothing else remained for the poor kangaroos. Luckily they stayed away from vehicles, so at least we weren’t in danger of crashing into them. Further along the way, we met some cattle drovers who’d been driving their cattle thousands of miles over a period of months, towards areas where they knew there’d been small amounts of rain. There were just five of them to look after more than a thousand animals, and we learnt that they just drove their cattle towards wherever it rained. They never knew what would happen from one day to the next, which seemed a strange, unattractive sort of life to me. Then we finally approached a big town, where there was a huge zoo. By this time, we really wanted to get out of our car and do something, so we parked up and went in. The zoo had mainly Australian animals, some of which we’d already come across along the way, so we were quite keen to find out more about them. We saw a crocodile show, where they get crocodiles to jump out of the water by hanging some meat in the air. Far from being the quiet animals they look when they are fast asleep on a riverbank, they were transformed into fierce, snapping creatures that reminded me of ancient, terrifying dinosaurs. While we were there, two new crocodiles arrived. The two adults had been found injured in the wild, and transported to the zoo in a plane, inside special long wooden boxes designed to keep crocodiles cool and quiet during a journey. Once they were at the zoo, they were released into their pond, and they ran straight into the water to cool off, sinking down until just their eyes were visible. Then we went off to see some kangaroos. This time, rather than just seeing them from afar, you could touch them if you wanted and feel their soft fur. One actually had a baby in its special pouch, like a little pocket, with just the baby’s tail sticking out! The keeper happened to mention that adult kangaroos can kick at their enemies really fiercely, so I decided against getting too near the mother, even though she was with the keeper, and just settled for a photo instead.
